Defend Against Digital Burglars

Defend Against Digital Burglars

21st-century burglars include criminals and creeps who exploit vulnerabilities in smart home devices like garage door openers and wireless cameras.

Criminals and creeps are finding ways to access the digital cameras inside our homes and watch us, watch our children.

Many households now have entire networks of internet-connected devices, such as computers, gaming consoles, TVs, tablets, smartphones, and wearables. Regularly checking and improving the security of these networks is necessary to keep your family safe.

The Basics

Run a Clean Machine

Ensure all internet-enabled devices run the latest operating system, web browsers, and security software, including mobile devices that access your wireless network.

Secure Your Wireless Router

Connecting an internet access point - such as a cable modem or DSL modem - to a wireless router creates a wireless network. Wireless internet access allows you to connect multiple devices from different parts of your home to the internet. Without securing your router, people can access information on your computer, freeload off your internet service, and commit cybercrimes using your network.

  1. Change the name of your router

  2. Change the present password on your router

  3. Review security options

  4. Create a guest network

  5. Use a firewall

I must reinforce the importance of doing more than the bare minimum to keep your digital home safe. Here are four resources for you to use to dive deeper into strategies that keep your family safeguarded.
