The Baldwins are Not Like Us

I just read the Vogue article Hilaria Baldwin Attempts Organized Routine, Embraces Chaos. Before my diatribe pointing out the nonsense of their bad PR fake news puff piece with affiliate links to sell her crap, I need to set the record straight. No, I am not a regular reader of Vogue; I just saw it mentioned on LinkedIn.

Back to the article.

Hilaria Baldwin makes American families like mine feel like we're doing something wrong. The article shared a typical day in her life, and what is most astonishing is that they are so disconnected from reality that they actually thought it made them look normal.

Vogue used the article to point out how Hilaria "embraces the chaos" of their seven kids with a timeline of her day. She fails to mention that they have a rotating cast of nannies and babysitters, usually with two on at any given time.

The article's smokescreen of outsourcing most caregiving and home management tasks is a missed opportunity to give busy dual-career couples actual ideas that can help.

If you have the means to outsource the tasks that make your life easier, do it! Outsourcing is an excellent way to create time for one another. By failing to bring this up, they create the illusion that they are dealing with the chaos alone, diminishing the tireless efforts of busy dual-career couples who don't have multiple around-the-clock nannies.

The article read like a Hallmark movie script of perfect parenting and managing life. But that's not real for most people. Real people clean the kitchen multiple times a day, find ways to get loads of laundry cycled through, and make some time to pay the bills.

People shouldn't hide from outsourcing home management tasks. We are fortunate to have the means to outsource tasks such as our lawn and semi-monthly deep cleanings. If we could afford to outsource more, we would.

My issue with the Vogue article is that it makes real families with real chaos feel like we're doing something wrong because it was so important for the Baldwins to make it look like they were doing everything right by themselves.
